Papers submitted to the International Journal of Heritage and Sustainable Development must comply with the following rules and procedures.


1- Submission procedures and contacts

The On-line Articles Submission link at the IJHSD's Web site is the only possible way for submitting articles to the journal. Only .doc (MSW) and .odt (Open Office) files will be accepted. All other formats (eg. .pdf or .txt) cannot be accepted for review and Authors will be asked to resubmit. Please note that papers sent by e-mail or post will not be considered for review and manuscripts will not be returned.

Please make sure that all your contact information is correct and clearly written.

The paper will be refereed by members of the Editorial Board, according to the expertise area of the paper's subject. Revisions may be asked to the author before a final decision to publish the paper is made.

In case of co-authorship, a corresponding Author must be indicated, who will be the only responsible for correspondence and corrected proofs.

2- Language and style

Papers should be written in Standard English. Papers not complying with this will be rejected and not sent for academic review. The author(s) may be asked by the Editor in chief to resubmit a revised version of the paper.

If the quality of written English is not standard, the Author will be asked to resubmit a revised proof before the Editorial Board review.

The paper must be written in a clear style, preferably with simple language and short sentences. The use of headers, subheadings and, where appropriate, figures is encouraged. The paper must also contain a concise title, a short abstract, an introduction, a discussion, a conclusion and references.

3- Standard article rules

The Paper must follow the style rules of this Journal. A template file is given in order to format the Paper in accordance to the Journal's rules. Papers not in accordance with the following rules and template styles will be asked for correction before review.

3.1- Size and layout

The paper must be typed in one column on a A4 paper, with a 3 cm margin on all page sides, using the template file provided. Pages must be numbered consecutively. There should not be any addenda, or notes, or other explanatory content in any part of the standard page.
The headers and subheadings must be numbered, "Introduction" standing as "1".

3.2- Fonts and styles

The font used is "Tahoma" and styles are defined in the template file provided. Changes to styles defined in the template file cannot be accepted . Therefore, papers submitted not in accordance with the template will be returned for corrections.

3.3- Title and authors

The first page of the paper must contain a short and clear title, the names of the Authors, their affiliation, country of origin, and E-mail contact of the corresponding Author. Other Authors' contacts are optional.

3.4- Abstract and keywords

An Abstract must be provided by the Author. The Abstract should not exceed 200 words. The abstract must be placed after the author's information in accordance with the template file. The Abstract must summarize the key aspects of the paper, highlithing the conclusions and goals of the paper.

At the end of the Abstract, keywords must be selected in order to provide a clear and easy search.

3.5- Introduction

An Introduction must be written under Header 1. The Introduction should state the aims and goals of the paper, including the key references to contextualise the paper content. State-of-the art or literature reviews should not be placed in the Introduction.

3.6- Discussion / Conclusions

A final chapter of Discussion or Conclusions must be provided. In the final chapter the Author should emphasize the significance of the research, main contributions, applications, their limitations and relevance to previous research.

3.7- Acknowledgments

Authors can present a short paragraph for acknowledgements at the end of the text.

3.8- Endnotes

Authors can present explanatory notes to the text. These notes must be numbered consecutively (1,2,3,...) in the text and denoted by superscripts.

Endnotes should not be used for citations or references.

3.9- References

The Harvard system is applied. The responsibility of the references' accuracy lies on the Author.

References in the text must be quoted as following:

- Bell (2010) or (Bell, 2010);

- Bell and Edison (2010) or (Bell and Edison, 2010);

- Bell et al. (2010) or (Bell et al., 2010), if more than two authors.

References must be presented at the end of the text in alphabetical order by the first author's surname.

If references for a same Author are of a same year, they should be indicated by using 2010a, 2010b, etc.

The reference must be written as following:

- Bell, G. (2010) Innovations in phone connections, Journal of Electronics Research, 99 (1), 101-120.

- Bell, G. and Edison, T. (2010) Phones and People Styles, Green Lines Institute, Barcelos.

- Bell, G. (2010) Wireless phones, in T. Edison and G. Bell (eds.): Phones and People Styles, Green Lines Institute, Barcelos, pp. 101-120.

In case of no Author is named, the institution must be used as in the following example:

- Green Lines Institute (2010) Wireless Phone Use in Portugal, Barcelos.

3.10- Tables

Tables must be presented in a separate page, numbered consecutively and a concise title must be provided.

The placement of the tables in the text must be provided by using the indication "Table 1 goes here".

Explanatory footnotes are also accepted and must be placed in the end of the table and numbered by lower case letters.

Tables must follow the format given in the file "Instruction for Authors".

3.11- Figures

Figures must be submitted in a separate file sequentiatlly numbered in accordance to their placement in the text. Placement of the figures in the text must be provided by using the indication "Figure 1 goes here".

A concise caption must be provided.

Figures must be originals and no scanned images are accepted.

Figures files must be provided in a no less 300 dpi/ppi resolution for pictorial images and no less than 1200 dpi/ppi for graphs and drawings.

Figures must be submitted in format .jpg, .tif , .gif or .png in a way that allows their reproduction in gray scale.

Only Author's figures are allowed. Figures credits are not allowed.

3.12- Abbreviations, symbols and conventions

Abbreviations, symbols, and conventions must be in accordance with the recommended SI Units.

Numeral should be use for all numbers of two or more digits and for single digits when attached to units of measure.

Abbreviations must be defined in brackets after their first mention in the text as international agreed rules.

4- Articles proofs

Proofs of the paper will be sent to the Author and should be returned to the Editor within 5 days.
Except for typing errors, changes to the proofs cannot be accepted at this stage.

The Journal is not responsible for proofreading, and such responsibility lies only on the Author.

5- Acceptance and submission of corrected proofs

Corrected proofs must be returned to the Journal's Editor by E-mail.

Final acceptance of the paper will only be effective after submission of the corrected proof of the paper.

Instructions file (.doc) - contains detailed information concerning instructions for authors and format examples, such as tables and figures.
